Thanks to my friend Amy, who lives in San Francisco, I've landed on Becky's couch. She's her friend who lives in the the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Becky shares an old industrial loft with her roommates, Brian and Kaegan. I immediately feel at home surrounded by a dominating jumble ... just like the neighborhood.

Williamsburg faces Manhattan, located on the other side of the East River. It's a former industrial zone being renewed and, these days, pretty much serves as a home to squatters, young New York bohemians. The real estate promoters have really realized this and have already started building towers along the river, to the dismay of many in the neighborhood. In less than 10 months, rents have already doubled. At night, it isn't rare to see the young and hip come from Manhattan to slum around in the bars and the brand-new clubs in the area nicknamed Billburg, probably the place to be in NYC!
