Djaafar and the Caffé Trieste

And so the trail leads me to Caffe Trieste, where I meet Djaafa, age 34, originally from Algeria. In San Francisco, he has toiled as a taxi driver, then as a limo driver, and also as a security guard. Not one day goes by without him coming here, his HQ, for a double espresso. Along with three other regular customers of the cafe, he was the subject of an article in the San Francisco Chronicle for having hosted in his home, for five months, Roy Mottini, a local regular who is homeless. To find out about Roy's story and to get an idea of Djaafar's generosity, click here.

Practically speaking, Caffe Trieste hasn't changed since it was opened by the Giotta family in 1956... juke box, old stove, pictures of famous customers. And more than ever, it's still visited by writers and poets. It was a favorite place for Kerouac, Corso, Bukowski, Bob Kaufman...
