Gregory, age 39, grew up in Toronto and has been living in San Francisco for 11 years. He is an independent journalist and is also the author of two books, Window Seat: Reading the Landscape from the Air and The Coffee Book: Anatomy of an Industry from Crop to the Last Drop, co-written with Nina, his wife. What drew him here to live was his interest in body-piercing and the good vibes of the City. He decided to pose in front of this Andrew Shoultz mural and explains why: “His work encapsulates a lot of my experiences in the Mission over the past decade: the tension around housing of course, but also the ideas of freedom within a crowded urban environment, the dynamic motion and color, the cohesive community in spite of it all, and the very public, outdoor nature of the medium — there’s something for everyone here if they’re willing to take the time to see it…”

The Mission is a mosaic of colors, with its murals, its antique wooden Victorians, old abandoned theaters, and eclectic population, including Mexicans, vegan lesbians, anarchists, and expedient dot-commers... To get a better idea of the district, my utmost recommendation is to read Gregory's excellent article on The Mission that was written for the travel section of the New York Times.
