Thirty or so people make up our camp. It falls upon each person to participate in communal chores for our community to function well. Becky here, alias Barbarella, is in the middle of peeling carrots... (By the way, I would later realize that it was at her place that I found myself at my first private party in San Francisco a few days ago.) On the to-do list: the typical dishwashing but done with water conservation in mind, obviously, being in the middle of the desert; making meals; filling bags of water to take showers with; housecleaning...

Next, we take turns making smoothies, fresh fruit-based beverages with ice cubes processed in a blender -- ultra refreshing, and more than greatly appreciated by our visitors.... Each camp in Black Rock City offers a specialty. The camp nextdoor offers gin martinis. And across the way, they have set up an actual bar with tables and sofas and offer beer on tap that they themselves pour. No money is exchanged anywhere in BRC. Everything is free, and the intended idea is that a token gift is provided in return... gifts like a whimsical bracelet, a simple smile, or a good joke!
