Back in the City after an insane week in the desert, I find myself back once again at Vesuvio, the most Kerouac-like of all places in SF, to have one last drink -- Cheers to Jack! That's the ultimate tribute to Kerouac because, on this day, a reading of excerpts from On the Road is getting started here in celebration of its 50th anniversary.

Upstairs, the readers include Rodger Jacobs, a local resident and organizer of the event, a producer, and, like Kerouac, a man of letters. The readers follow one another at the microphone and are accompanied by three jazz musicians. Excerpts are read from the new version of the text, which uses the real names behind the characters with a few unpublished passages included. Everybody is listening. And in the end, I felt a profound feeling of gratitude emanating from each individual in thanks of Jack Kerouac...
